Wendy Kelly

While she may not have grown up in a horse racing environment, Wendy Kelly is an emerging force, a successful and experienced Group One trainer, and she continues to flourish in her chosen career path.

Wendy Kelly is not like most other thoroughbred trainers.  Growing up in Traralgon, Victoria, she rode horses on her family property, only attending her first race meeting at 28 years old.

Wendy was actively showing her Russian Wolfhounds on the dog show circuit when she met her husband Kevin, who introduced her to the racing industry.  After getting married, the couple purchased a share in the horse, Black Stunner, and had a win at Caulfield. Wendy began helping Black Stunner’s trainer, Mick Bell.  It was long before Wendy’s passion for racing was ignited, and she decided to try her hand at thoroughbred training.

In 1994, her first year of training, Wendy achieved six wins and was named “Picnic Trainer of the Year.” Shortly thereafter, Wendy received her trainers licence and is today considered a premier top class trainer.

Wendy’s career highlights include Group One winner Bon Hoffa and Tango Amigo’s, with both horses bringing her stable success. Being a progressive horse trainer, Wendy and her committed team now train up to 26 horses at any one time.
