What a brilliant result for all involved in Steinem’s Group 2 Peter Young win at Sandown over 1800m yesterday.

Below we have a post-race recap from Ciaron Maher & John Allen thanks to ‘Racing and Sports’.

Ciaron Maher:

Impressed first-up: “It was the idea to have her right for the Australian Cup and have that residual fitness. That’s why we didn’t go to the Perth Cup. We wanted to bring her home and target these races.

“I was really confident with her today. I said during the week on the radio that I thought she was the one.

“Good track, fast tempo, I couldn’t believe her odds and Johnny Allen, he rides that mare really good.

“She can be a bit quirky in the barriers and different things like that. Super ride and you can see he just waited, waited. I was like ‘come on mate, Keats is off and gone’.

“It was super. Fantastic.

“She went missing when the track were wet. She really enjoys these firm tracks. There was a bit of pressure building on me but I think it is starting to sway my way.

Progress: “She just kept developing every year. She gets bigger and bigger and stronger and Johnny will be able to attest to that.

“She did show that ability early and we did put her in the Australasian Oaks. I was a little bit disappointed but I think she’ll repay us.”

John Allen:

“She obviously produced. It can be hard for fillies sometimes to travel all that way (to Perth) and come back again.

“Great testament to her temperament. She’s obviously very well bred and as Ciaron said she’s big and strong when I sat on her first time round and she’s really developing.

“She had to be good today. It’s been a while since she’s won a race. I wasn’t sure if she remembered how to do it but she was good and tough today.

Pace in the race: “I knew we were fairly rocking along and I was confident a few horses further along would give me a good trail into it. I probably exposed her a bit early but she dug it out late.

“I could see one coming over my shoulder and I knew it was Gold Trip after pulling up but to her credit she really stuck her head out to win it.”
