Capriccio, courtesy of a fantastic training performance by Daniel Bowman, netted her owners all but $500 of her purchase price when winning the Inglis Dash at Flemington on Australian Guineas Day.
With the sales currently in full flight, the daughter of I Am Invincible was a $300k purchase at the 2019 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Bred by Esker Lodge out of Lonhro mare Lonhspresso, Bowman purchased the filly and in conjunction with Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock’s Darren & Liz Dance quickly filled all available shares.
First-up after a Winter & Spring campaign netted her Maiden win at Ballarat, the filly was sent out big odds against very good 3YO company, many whom had multiple wins and great city form to their names.
She had trialled up well, but initial markets gave her little hope of winning.
After presenting beautifully in the mounting yard, a sprinkle of late money seen her odds shorten from $81 into $41 starting price.
For those who took the generous odds, they would have felt comfortable when she settled towards the outside rail, but behind horses who were also travelling well.
Damian Lane didn’t panic and let her travel into the race on the bridle.
It was evident at the 200m mark she was going to go close if she could finish off the race.
And that she did, running away for a comprehensive three quarter length win down the famous Flemington straight.
The win keeps in check the unique sequence that has her following in mum’s racetrack footsteps – both are now Flemington straight track winners as well as Maiden winners at Ballarat.
Coincidently, Lonhspresso also won her second race on the same day eight years earlier at Sandown.
Let’s hope the similarities continue as Capriccio aims to build-up a black type resume.
Lonhspresso won the Group 2 Euclase Stakes at Morphettville over 1200m, followed by the Listed Straight Six at Flemington the following season.
The win had extra significance for ATB clients David & Karen Dunstan, finally achieving their lifelong ambition of having a winner at Flemington.
