Rob Hickmott
Robert Hickmott is a multiple group one winning trainer. His wins include two Melbourne Cups, Caulfield, Sydney and Australian Cups. With a lifetime of experience in racing, Rob knows what it takes to win big races. But it’s not just the high profile group ones that drive him. Rob enjoys sharing the thrill of racing with his owners, whether it’s a small country meet or the big stage at Flemington.
Rob Hickmott is a laidback quiet achiever who grew up in country Victoria before playing AFL football and then rising to the top of the sport of kings.
In his teens, Rob was an aspiring jockey, riding trackwork for his father John Hickmott at the family’s property in North Wangaratta. A talented footballer, he was drafted to Essendon and played for Melbourne Football Club before injury cut his AFL career short. While Rob embraced a return to country football, his focus was always on racing.
Through the 90’s and early 200’s, Rob worked in foreman roles at Caulfield, Murray Bridge and the Gold Coast. In 2003, he commenced working for Lloyd Williams, taking on the Head Trainer role in 2009. During this time, Rob accumulated a wealth of experience training elite European stayers along with thirteen group one wins. In 2018, Rob took time off from his role at Macedon Lodge to establish his own training base at Caulfield racecourse. With the closure of the training facilities at Caulfield in 2021, Rob has secured a brand new training facility at the progressive Ballarat Turf Club which is sole focus since Macedon Lodge was sold at the end of 2022.
