Sirius Plan Sets Up Straight Win
Feb 15, 2020
A pre-race plan hatched by trainer Saab Hasan and jockey Brad Rawiller in conjunction with track-walker and form analyst Peter Ellis was the catalyst behind Sirius Suspect's win in the $126,000 Royal Ascot BM90 Handicap over 1200m at Flemington today.
With morning rain the track was down-graded into the slow range, meaning tactics were going to play a major part in the race.
A natural speed horse, coursing wide with two other horses was the winning move.
It was a move that fooled most of the field, with all but two jockeys initially heading to the rail before then re-coursing to the outside.
Sirius Suspect found a good rhythm and was not pressured out in front as the rest of the field jostled for positions some three to four lengths astern.
He gave a good kick at the 300m, and while the runner-up Taniko closed late, the 5YO son of Wanted had a long head to spare on the line.
Prezado was only a neck back in third position.
For trainer Saab Hasan it was an emotional win, especially at his home base of Flemington on Black Caviar Lighting Stakes Day.
A hands-on horseman, his dedication to this horse has been exceptional.
His work with Brad Rawiller who has now won five times on the gelding has left no stone unturned since aiming for this race.
Plans are now to step out to 1400m, with the Group 3 Strawberry Road at Flemington next month one option.
Sirius Suspect's race record now stands at six wins and six placings from 18 starts with just over $283,000 in the bank for owners.
