Our Flemington Spring Carnival Runners
Nov 01, 2019
On the eve of Australia's greatest racing carnival, the excitement is building for owners in four of our racehorses.
For any owner, having a runner at 'Headquarters' is a big thrill and one that most yearn for, but to be standing in the mounting yard during one of the four days of the Flemington Spring Carnival is next level.
Rubbing shoulders with racing's elite and cheering home your runner is an experience Darren & Liz Dance through their business Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock love bringing to their owners.
These days can bring lasting memories - win, lose or draw!
Next week ATB are thrilled to be able to offer this experience once again.
Below is a form snapshot of all four runners.
Tuesday, November 5th - $7.75m Lexus Melbourne Cup, 3200m
SOUTHERN FRANCE - Trainers: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace / Jockey: Mark Zahra
This Spring Carnival we are once again lucky enough to have a Melbourne Cup runner - Southern France - an International purchase that we get to enjoy the ownership thrill in partnership with trainers, Ciaron Maher & David Eustace and some of their clientele.
The 5YO son of Galileo has settled in very well at the Werribee Quarantine Centre since arriving on October 13th.
After his last start third in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh on September 15th, the entire has trained on beautifully under the watchful eye of Maher and the Aidan O'Brien team who previously trained him.
Most of his training since arriving has been in unison with former stablemate Il Paradiso, and from my 'untrained' eye he has worked equally if not better than that 4YO, also by Galileo.
With Mark Zahra booked to ride, we feel we have an inform jockey who rides Flemington exceptionally well.
The question we would loved answered now, is does Southern France bring this A game to Flemington next Tuesday afternoon.
His form around Cross Counter, Downdraft, Stradivarius, Kew Gardens is elite overseas staying form.
Many have failed in their Melbourne Cup quest, but in recent years more and more International groups are getting the type of horse and programming right.
We believe we have the right horse with the right form, coming from the right overseas stable to right Australian stable with the right big time jockey.
The barrier draw and weather conditions and racing luck are variables out of our control, but we feel the rest is spot on.
We have been close to winning this race in the past; have the planets finally aligned in 2019.
Best of luck to his ownership group Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Halo Racing Services Pty Ltd, Mrs JM McKenna, DP Dance, Southern France, JT Ogle, Waggun, CJ Favre, CC Pickford, B Pang, Dr A Pang, FF Fairthorne, NJ Todd, AL Herbert, Mrs SM Montague, RH Montague, LS McCluskey & Cup Racing Crew.
Thursday, November 7th - $1m Kennedy Oaks, 2500m
GAMAY - Trainer: Archie Alexander / Jockey: Declan Bates
Gamay (above) is a filly that had been ear-marked for the classic 3yo races well before she had her first race start.
Everything about her, from her breeding, being a daughter of Pierro, to what she has shown from day one on the training track had trainer Archie Alexander convinced she was a Spring filly.
Initially the Thousand Guineas was in her plans, but once her current preparation began, her stoutness and ability to stay all day shone through.
Capping those thoughts was a tough win in the Group 2 Ethereal Stakes over 2000m on Caulfield Cup Day.
Declan Bates has handled her very well each run and that affinity with the confidence building Group one victory on Begood Toya Mother for trainer Daniel Bowman earlier in the Spring, leaves us with no doubt that he can get the job done.
In conjunction with her breeders Coolmore, it is going to an exciting day for everyone involved, nonetheless Archie Alexander and his team as they strive for their first Group One success.
From a Ballarat polytrack Maiden win in September to Oaks Day at Flemington, we dare to dream!
Best of luck to her ownership group Cobra, R Menchise, Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Pty Ltd, MV Magnier, P Shanahan, MJ Eastmure, CJG Smith, Ms EM Lawlor, Mrs Y Nicoll, D Oman & Mrs VM Adams-Smith.
Thursday, November 7th - $125k BM90 Bumble Trophy Handicap, 1800m
MR MONEY BAGS - Trainer: Robbie Griffiths / Jockey: Jye McNeil
On paper, this preparation for Mr Money Bags (above) looks very ordinary, but in fact his last three runs have been very good. Even four runs back at Caulfield he ran home the fastest last 400m for the day when only finishing eleventh.
These runs showed he is fit and healthy.
The calendar did not lend itself to any 1600m when he was needing it, the 1400m races at Listed level a bit sharp even though he continued to finish of his races strongly.
Last start in the Sale Cup, a slowly run race meant he couldn't get into the race when it counted, but once again he was one of the strongest horses through the line.
Jye McNeil suggested what we all thought and that was trying him over a longer trip again.
On Thursday we get to see him over 1800m on Oaks Day in the BM90 $125k Bumble Trophy Handicap.
The slight drop back from Listed level to Benchmark grade is also in his favour, as is his favourite track, Flemington.
Can he make it four wins at headquarters!
Best of luck to his ownership group Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Pty Ltd, MJ Burgess, PC McClymans, Brown Gecko Racing, AJ Brown, D Sudomirski, DW Spicer, Mrs PN Curran, Boxing On 2, DK Prouse, JD Brown, NTJ Tara, ML Rosenzweig, Coronet Racing, S N McCarty, JE McCarty, D Rosenzweig, RL Emery, JKS Kociolek & W B Lord.
Thursday, November 7th - $125k 3yo & 4yo Mares BM70 Twitter Trophy Handicap, 1800m
COLLECTABLE - Trainer: Robbie Griffiths / Jockey: Jye McNeil
Collectable's Spring preparation has had a few speed humps along the way, but hopefully for all the frustration her owners have endured, a pot of gold may await them on Oaks Day.
After an Autumn program that included placings behind the smart Princess Jenni and Verry Elleegant, the daughter of Sebring then competed well in the Winter culminating with a third placing on this track in the Rivette Final behind Great Duchess.
A freshen up, followed with her resumption at Mornington on AFL Grand Final day before a late scratching at Seymour meant Sale last weekend was needed in preparation for Thursday's race over 1700m.
The Sale run was good and with her best form at 1600m and beyond, she looks suited on this spacious track.
Her best form is better than BM70 level, let's hope she brings that form.
For a filly aiming at her first city win, why not do it on Oaks Day!
Best of luck to her ownership group Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Pty Ltd, JE Turner, Ms DL Grech, PJ Roberts, HYH Wut, JB Stokes, Mrs JL Roberts, PE Miall, GG Duncan, RD Griffiths, Gleneagles Stud Pty Ltd, Beejayville Racing, CJG Smith & GJ Ferguson.
OTHER ATB RUNNERS
Today we have Sono Dolce running at Kilcoy and tomorrow we have French Fizz at Traralgon.
Sono Dolce trained by Damian Batters has been good in her first two runs for the stable and today gets her chance back to this weaker Maiden grade. She will start near enough to favourite.
Friday, November 1st, Kilcoy, 1060 Maiden - R 2 H13 Nathan Thomas, 2.57pm
French Fizz (below, winning at Geelong) is finding it hard to win this preparation, but the Maher/Eustace stable have found a suitable assignment at Traralgon on Saturday.
With Harry Coffey back in the saddle this 1100m 0-58 from a reasonable barrier looks in her wheelhouse.
Forecast rain isn't favourable, but with a little more luck than last start at Echuca, she can figure in the finish.
Saturday, November 2nd, Traralgon, 1100 0-58 Handicap - R6 H7 Harry Coffey, 4.05pm
Good luck to both sets of connections.
