Tulpar shakes the bridesmaid tag
Oct 03, 2019
After a frustrating first preparation that ended with a leg injury and eight months away from the racetrack, Tulpar recorded her first win in the Jayco Maiden Plate over 1600 at Bendigo last Friday.
With the bridesmaid tag well and truly attached after four consecutive seconds late last year, the 4yo mare started her current preparation with little luck courtesy of bad barriers over the shorter trips.
And while a bad barrier was again a negative, the stretch out to a mile on the big Bendigo track with Luke Currie in the saddle showed up plenty of reasons to run.
With the tempo even, Luke was able to switch the mare off, albeit well back in the field of twelve.
As runs were made from the 600m mark, the pair blended into the race beautifully around the home turn.
It was apparent early in the home straight that she was going to be in the finish, but the ease with which she rounded up the field and finished off strongly was impressive.
Her turn of foot at the end of the mile, will hopefully allow her to now work through the grades.
Luke Currie was also impressed with her finish.
"She has been getting back from wide draws over the shorter trips and has had to use up her energy just getting into the race.
This race panned out well for her though, with the added fitness and the slower tempo up in distance she just jogged for me. She was able to get onto the back of horses going forward and she towed me up around the corner."
She sprinted quite quickly, you like to see horses with that turn of foot."
Purchased at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Tulpar is the daughter of Star Witness and Choisir mare Sundays Girl.
