Connery - a bigger stage awaits!

Apr 01, 2018

It may have been a lowly Stawell maiden, but for trainer, jockey and owners, Connery's win was a welcome relief at the popular Easter venue today.

A combination of bad luck and good opposition had left the son of Pierro frustratingly winless after six starts.

It was only a matter of time before he would restore the faith that trainer Archie Alexander and jockey Jordan Childs always had in him.

Close-up placings behind Civil Disobedience, Boorooj, Parsifal and Han Xin left him as one of country Victoria's best performed maidens.

While April 1st had some connections slightly uneasy, Easter Sunday sat very well with others, especially when looking for their horse to rise to the occasion.

And not unlike his Hollywood namesake, he did.

In true gangster-style he put today's opposition to the sword with an easy three length win.

Starting a $1.30 favourite in the Sarah De Santis - Labor for Ripon Maiden over 1600m, the win brought post race comments of relief and satisfaction from both jockey and trainer.

"He's been knocking on the door and really deserves this win more so for his owners and ATB who have been really patient. We have always known his ability, but he just kept running into a bit better horses. It's just great to knock off the maiden today." Childs happily reported.

Alexander re-enforced his long-standing beliefs in the gelding.

"It sounds stupid when I say he is a good horse, taking seven starts to break his maiden, but he actually is a good horse and I think we will go straight to town with him."

After jumping well, Childs elected to sit back off the speed, allowing the 3YO to find a nice rhythm.

Before straightening he moved up three wide and while it took him a few strides to balance up upon straightening, he quickly moved past leaders Skyschiller and eventual runner-up, War Piglet.

The win was comfortable, but for Childs he was happy with how he reacted when put under pressure.

"He ran through the line strongly and responded well when I gave him one with the persuader (whip). Hopefully this helps teach him how to win going forward."

The win also broke the ice for both trainer and jockey, as they celebrated their first wins with ATB.

And it certainly won't be the last, especially with this little pocket-rocket.

His Hollywood namesake starred in many famous movies, and while today was only a bit-part-film for the promising gelding, one feels a starring role on a much bigger stage beckons.
