No Cup 'Heartbreak' for Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock
Nov 03, 2016
Darren and Liz Dance came oh so close to providing Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock clients with the ultimate dream with Heartbreak City in Tuesday's 2016 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
After looking the winner when he burst to the front in the home straight, the Lloyd Williams owned Almandin grabbed him close to the winning post.
It was a close call, and to a degree it was heart-breaking!
But the small losing margin, while frustratingly disappointing, was also thrilling for many owners and another big advertisement that the Dances and their syndicating business know the right ingredient when it comes to having a live chance in a Melbourne Cup.
Just over two months ago when the tough little gelding won the Ebor Handicap at York, agent Chris Blomeley acted for ATB, negotiating a successful deal that included the retention of his original Irish-born / New York based owners.
He ticked all the boxes ATB require in a Cup runner and actually painted up a similar profile to last year's runner-up Max Dynamite.
And while we fated the same result as Max Dynamite, it was a brilliant and exciting experience for so many owners, which in turn extended out to their family and friends.
The lead-up to race day gradually built to what was a huge final crescendo - one all involved will never forget.
Trainer, Tony Martin and his team were meticulous in the horses preparation at Werribee and engaged in every aspect of what we regard highly with our business and that's communication and access for our owners.
Engaging one of the world's best jockeys gives you an edge. The way Joao Moreira firstly conducted himself prior to the race and rode during it explains why you get the best.
And finally we cannot forget Aidan, Niall and Charlie; part-owners and bonded as friends for life through Tuesday's experience.
Aidan's reaction after the Cup with Channel Seven's Neil Kearney was priceless and showed those guys are in the game for all the right reasons - and helped expose us to the world.
Normally the runner-up is not the story, but those guys have helped profile what was a memorable day.
All three are truly lovely gentleman and we as Aussies loved experiencing some of your Irish ways, maybe except for the solid week's drinking.
Being at Crown when Charlie sang one of your countries 'cultural' songs was truly a special and touching moment.
Where Heartbreak City takes us from here is unknown for now, but hopefully we can all gather again for another crack at our greatest race!
The Melbourne Cup is a special race, one that ATB love being involved in and one that we will continue to pursue.
Heartbreak City's second adds to Jakkalberry (3rd), Dandino (5th) Seismos (9th) and Unusual Suspect (9th), showing we are on the right track.
Our motto is 'We Race With You' and hopefully one day we can say 'We Won The Melbourne Cup With You'
